Root Canal Therapy in Burnaby

At Marine Way Dental Centre in South Burnaby, we are pleased to offer root canal services to help fix teeth that have been impacted by trauma, infection or decay.

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a procedure performed by your dentist, oral surgeon, or endodontist in order to help restore and fix a tooth or teeth that have been affected by tooth decay or an infection.

Signs & Symptoms:

  • An abscess on the gums
  • Extreme sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures
  • Severe tooth pain
  • Swelling
  • Tenderness

In some cases, no symptoms will be present which is why it is vital to visit your dentist at least twice a year for a routine check-up. If you are experiencing any or all of the above symptoms, contact Marine Way Dental Centre South Burnaby to arrange a consultation.

Why do I Require a Root Canal?

  • Infection or decay has traveled to the pulp of the tooth (the living tissue within the tooth)
  • An infection has developed within the tooth or at the tip of the tooth
  • The tooth or teeth have experienced injury or trauma

Root Canals in Burnaby: The Procedure

A root canal procedure will often require one or more visits to your dentist. The first step in a root canal involves the creation of an opening at the top of the tooth using a dental drill.

Once the dentist has opened the tooth, they will then proceed to remove the infected or damaged tooth pulp (tissue).

The area will then be flushed and disinfected with an irrigant that removes bacteria and dissolves the remaining pulpal tissue. Once all the infected pulp has been removed, the dentist will generally fill the cavity with gutta-percha.

In some cases, the dentist will not seal the tooth on the same day and will require the patient to return after the tooth has been treated and medicated.

What Should I Expect After My Root Canal Appointment?

After the root canal procedure, the tooth may feel tender or sensitive due to inflammation.

Your dentist will provide you with specific instructions to care for your tooth in order to prevent infection and to ensure optimal healing.

Your dentist may also recommend over the counter pain medication to manage discomfort.

After a root canal, most patients will return to their normal activities with a few days.
